Tech isn't a stranger to Newmarket
Newmarket likely isn't the first place that you think of when you think of a "tech hub" in Ontario. And I'll be honest - before landing at Newmarket, I never would have thought of it as one either. But, after doing some research, I found out that Newmarket is actually part of the largest tech cluster in Canada. In fact, York Region has more tech companies per capita that Waterloo!!
As you folks know, in my job, I get to go out and visit with some pretty amazing companies and over the last year I've had the opportunity to visit with many local tech companies. So today, I'm sharing a bit of my research and a really quick overview of the companies that are here, that I've already visited or that someone told me I HAVE to go visit. If I miss any that you think are epic, please message me so I can add them to my ever growing list. So here are a few you need to check out whether as a place to work or just because tech is cool.
Treefrog (which like all good tech companies - started with 3 people in a basement) on the outside is a digital marketing company with an eye for design and top quality development, building amazing apps and websites. Dig a little deeper though and Treefrog also is at the leading edge of IOT (Internet of Things) and development software platforms. Located right in the Urban Corridors of Newmarket, many Treefrog employees spend their summers walking and biking to work.
Tech giant XE was started by two local gentlemen who in 1995 moved their business from a country basement (see a theme here?) to the financial district in Toronto. After much hard work and success - XE moved back to Newmarket in 2005 before they launched their currency conversion app which saw over a million downloads in its first year. XE is one of the top 500 websites in the world and is used by companies world wide for their currency conversion.
As I mentioned in a previous blog, local company Lotek makes wearable tech for animals to track and understand their eating and movement habits to assist in conservation efforts. It's an amazing company that pairs a passion for technology and the environment in a positive way.
We've also talked before about companies like Microcel and their tech enabling processes.
Newmarket is also home to ERP/PSA (Enterprise Resource Planning/Process Services Automation) software companies Solutions360 and Phoenix. Solutions360 is growing fast and will be doubling their office space in October to accommodate their growth!
And now - Envi. Newmarket officially announced that local company Envi Network will be bringing high-speed broadband to businesses which will further develop the tech sector located here. With faster internet speed - productivity increases seem inevitable along with the ability to grow and pivot.
I think this is an exciting time to be in Newmarket. The companies that are here are of the highest caliber and they are doing truly unique and innovative things. With the new ISP launching, these companies should be able to increase their productivity and reach. As more companies grow and develop here, I don't think it's a stretch to say that Newmarket's tech community will continue to expand.
