Newmarket Company Outfits Caribou with Wearable Tech (and they are hiring!)
In my role, I get to meet many amazing entrepreneurs, founders and business people. Not that long ago, I had the opportunity to meet with Jim Lotimer at his company, Lotek. Jim is an incredibly enthusiastic guy with a passion for using technology to advance research about animals. Jim reminded me just how little we actually know about animals, especially those that we don't interact with on a daily basis. Lotek, through its wearable technology has been working to change that from their headquarters in Newmarket since 1984.
Lotek creates what is essentially "wearable tech" for wild animals. The company designs, creates and manufactures bio-telemeters (devices used to remotely measure various pieces of data) in removable collars, beacons etc. The technology can be used for everything from elephants and caribou to small birds and fish. This technology is used by conservationists, governments and companies to understand the impact of various projects, learn more about species habits and so much more. Lotek’s technology is being used in over 100 countries and in every ocean!
After I met with Jim I heard an episode of CBC's spark that just happened to be on theYukon government's use of Lotek's collars in the porcupine caribou. It gives a shining example of the ways that Lotek's technology works and can add to our knowledge of animals. It even includes a .gif of the caribou having lunch to demonstrate the abilities of this technology.
Lotek hires software engineers and electronics assemblers along with a team of support staff to get all of this cool work done. Their headquarters in Newmarket, ON is only a one minute walk to Arch Brewery and Cambodian Noodle King and is just around the corner from Bullseye Axe Throwing and the 404.
Currently they are hiring an Account Manager for their global Freshwater Team! This is a very cool opportunity for someone, combining technology and the environment in a way that makes a positive contribution to the quality of life.
