Beautified in your Backyard – How to stay local for your wellness services
Long hair growing? Bare nails showing? Hockey flow..flowing? I don’t know about anyone else, but pre-pandemic, I certainly took for granted the luxury of being able to book a hair cut with my favourite Main Street Newmarket salon and a manicure to keep me looking and feeling my best. Since COVID began, most beauty services have been closed for many many months and yet many have continued to offer incredible COVID safe options to keep their clients looking and feeling their best! I’ve included a few below that I highly encourage you to try out – if not just to support our personal services businesses but also because I think these are such a great option!
1) Call your salon and get on a waitlist for an appointment post-lockdown. Sure, there’s some uncertainty and you might have to re-book later on if reopening doesn’t happen by your appointment date but this option is a win-win. It’s a win for you as a client because you are pre-booked and not subject to the re-opening root touch-up rush. You know you are booked in, and most salons prioritize re-scheduling these appointments before going to the waitlist if things get pushed back. And it’s a win for your salon because they can begin to recall staff, give some assurances to their team about bookings and begin to plan for inventory and general opening. If you don’t have a go-to hair and nail salon yet – visit the Choose Local site and check out the many great offerings right here in Newmarket!
2) If, like many people during COVID you’ve become a bit of a Do-it-yourself-er for everything from baking bread to growing veggies –maybe after a year of the pandemic you are up for a bigger challenge. The lockdown DIY dye, cut or style might be for you. Fear not though – many of your favourite salons are offering virtual cut-consultations, pre-mixed, colour matched root-touch-up kits and more.
3) Pay-it-Forward. I thought this was such a great idea. One of Newmarket’s local spas is offering a pay-it-forward program where if you purchase a $50 gift card for yourself, they will donate a Spa Pedicure to a Front Line Worker!
4) Salon quality retail at home! We have all had to adapt during COVID – (how many people as they rang in 2020 thought they’d perpetually be having Bring Your Kid/Dog/Cat/Partner to work day while perched at a corner of the kitchen table) –and our personal services are not exempt. Despite very much missing my stylist – I do love that I can now get that salon-quality clean and style by shopping for my hair stylist's recommendations in the salon’s online store. Now if only I could replicate that scalp massage my stylist always provides!
As we move into different stages of reopening we encourage you to choose local at every opportunity. We are excited to move forward and hope that we can come together to ensure the success of our local businesses.
