From Window Shopping to Staying in Touch- How to Support Retailers this month

The Choose Local Blog Series features creative ways that Newmarket residents can support small businesses during the four-week shutdown any beyond. The industries covered will include retail, personal services, restaurants, and more. If you have ideas for this series please email shoplocal@newmarket.ca

It’s been a while since we’ve written here at “Where Work Meets Play” but, as the Province enters its third Province-wide lockdown in 13 months, we figured that it might be nice to provide you with a few ideas of how you can support your local small businesses and spread some love during the month of April. So, here are a few ideas:

1) Make a List and Check it Twice - We know it’s not Christmas but you’d sure make it feel like it for local businesses if you took on this challenge. Try making a list of what you need to buy (new shoes for the kids? a gift for a loved one’s birthday?) and spend 10-20 minutes having a look at Newmarket-based stores that might have what you are looking for. The Choose Local directory has hundreds of businesses who would be happy to help find what you need while supporting local. Other great sources for local recommendations are the Main Street BIA’s website and Facebook page, which include an awesome Gift Card program to support your favourite shops from afar. We also recommend you check out the Chamber of Commerce directory!

2) Get Social (Digitally) - Help businesses keep the momentum for curbside pick up and local delivery by sharing your local finds on social media and tagging the businesses. Use and follow the hashtag #ChooseNewmarket to find and share these local gems and give them a boost.

You can also help your favourite small shop by dropping them a five-star review on social or Yelp to share your experiences with others.

3) Stay in touch - Running a small business is a labour of love and we love our small businesses. Drop your favourite spots a note via email and let them know you are thinking of them. Ask for their suggestions for an upcoming holiday gift or ask them what they’d add to your purchase to make it even better! Spread kindness and let your favourite local shops know you are here for them now and when they are able to re-open.

4) Take a Stroll and Window Shop - The shops may be closed but so many are putting their personalities on display with awesome window décor. When you are out for a stroll, change up your route and walk by some of your favourite stores and check out what they have in the window. Follow up by giving them a call or email to place your order!
