Market & Co. opens tomorrow: a plate for every palate

The day is almost here, just one more sleep!  Market & Co. at Upper Canada Mall (UCM) is opening tomorrow (September 7) and it will not disappoint, offering everything from Canada’s first location of Midici Neopolitan Pizza Company to hand-crafted potato chips made right in front of your eyes (Ray Woodey’ Craft Chippery).    You know how they always say what’s old is new again…Newmarket originally got its name as the ‘new market’ north of Toronto. Well once again, this ‘new market’ will help to put us on the map with their wide selection of tasty treats and savory snacks. Foodies from far and wide will definitely be flocking to Newmarket.

We were lucky enough to get a sneak peek yesterday and of course sample some of the oh so delicious offerings that will be available starting tomorrow. This place definitely delivers what it promises – a place for the community to come together to celebrate and savour good food. It has a very local flavor with some of Newmarket’s own merchants including Newmarket Olive Oil Co., FloralEscense and Vince’s Market. This fabulous new addition has a homey feel, like the true markets of days gone by where you go to buy your homemade goods and gather with friends and family.

Every merchant has a story that they are happy to share. When you visit, be sure to ask about ‘Ma’ (yes, there is a real Ma behind Ma’s best quality soups). Ma’s love of cooking began when she was a wee girl cooking alongside her grandmother, mother and aunts. She developed an appetite for old world methods and quality ingredients. Now, this family-run business will open their first retail store at Market & Co. and share their families long loved soups (recipes that have been handed down for generations) with all of us.

Who feels like chicken tonight? Union chicken is hands down the best fried chicken I have ever had and their piri piri sauce…wow! Not surprising, seeing as the Executive Chef is Michael Angeloni, who was named one of Ontario’s ‘Top 30 under 30’ when he was only 24. Known for his creativity and versatility, Angeloni has worked with many of Toronto’s finest chefs and some of his culinary journey includes working at Splendido, L’Unita Enoteca and Grand Electric. He is also Executive Chef at Market and Co.’s neighbouring restaurant Amano Kitchen. This open-concept Italian restaurant is notoriously known for their home-made pasta and ready-made to-go dishes. Better wear your stretchy pants!

For the dessert lovers – don’t worry, there is no lack of ice cream, fresh pastries, cookies, cakes, tarts and candy. Bake Three Fifty is one of Toronto’s hottest food trucks (winning the Golden Fork grand prize at the Ontario Food Truck Festival in 2015) and has now found a home at Market and Co.  Cupcakes and cookies and candy…oh my! Bake Three Fifty is known for their build-your-own cupcakes and ice cream sandwiches which you can top with sprinkles, gummy bears, cotton candy, cookie dough and more. Amadeus Patisserie, the Sugar King Factory and Sweet Jesus ice cream are all on the list of must-try sweet treats!

While I have focused quite a bit on some of the more decadent choices, you can balance out these indulgences with lots of uber healthy option from places like the Village Juicery (with nutritionists behind the counter to help you pick out your perfect juice), Our farm organic bakery and Humble Roots Organic.

Tomorrow morning (September 7) the doors to Market and Co. will open for the first time at 8:30 a.m. for a traditional bread breaking ceremony and the first 200 people will receive a $25 UCM gift card.

Looking for a unique date idea or ladies night out? There are lots of upcoming classes that will teach you how to master the ultimate bakery style cupcake or how to perfectly pair coffee and food or EVOO and balsamic? Check out:
