Job Spotlight- This is not your grandfather's manufacturing but it could be yours!
I grew up in a small town, northwest of Newmarket. In my community, your family either farmed, worked in a trade or worked at a factory nearby. These skilled trades and manufacturing jobs, were what kept the economy running. There were some jobs in healthcare and the public sector but for the most part, those are the jobs people commuted for.
Newmarket's history isn't a lot different than that - maybe that's why I feel so at home here. There is a strong legacy of hardworking people finding meaningful and well paying jobs in the manufacturing industry. And while Newmarket is now home to many technology companies, amazing healthcare facilities and many great, innovative businesses - the manufacturing sector has stayed strong and often is where the innovative and technology focused companies that we should be raving about can be found. In fact, in 2017, the Town announced that Celestica would be moving it's Toronto manufacturing facility to Newmarket, which will be home to 500-700 jobs (creating an increase of about 7-9% in manufacturing jobs in Newmarket).
I recently chatted with a company who I met last year. I saw that they were hiring, so I reached out to get an update on what they were up to. (They are currently looking for a CNC Set-Up Operator to join their team.) Dual Design has been in business in Newmarket for 18 years and just recently moved into a space four times the size of their previous space to accommodate their business growing and changing. Mark and Jeff Laycock are two men with a vision for their company, a culture of engagement and creativity in their facility and a philosophy of good customer service and innovation. This company is a great example of Newmarket businesses being willing to innovate to succeed.
Newmarket's manufacturers all routinely tell me the same thing - they love this community, they love hiring locally, they love when they can help a family stop having crazy commutes and still maintain a high quality of living. The business owners and general managers of Newmarket's manufacturing facilities are dedicated to making this community a better place and are always pushing forward innovation.
Newmarket's advanced manufacturers are looking for dedicated, talented folks to join their teams. And guys- this isn't your grandfather's manufacturing. Newmarket manufacturers are running state of the art technologies and computer based systems. They are leaders in their industry. I encourage you to check them out if you are looking for the next step in your career.
